1st December

Sox and Snippets moved to Top Grazing to keep Paul company. 

20th December

Sox left us for his second gelding operation. Apparently a horse with one undescended testicle is called a rid or ridgling. The things we're learning! Snippets to be replaced in the Spring by Noah. 

27th December

56 trees (5 Holly, 50 Hazel, 1 Horse Chestnut) planted in Top Strip.

November 2016 - a mixed appraisal for new employee Paul

4th November

Mike P and John continued to remove Corsican pines from Top Strip. 

7th November

Paul hauls 6 huge logs from the Top Strip to the log shed - his first proper job!

10th November

John and Mike take down 6 Western Hemlock from the SW corner of the Pit Wood and cut them ready for logging.

Mark came to give advice on underplanting.

We moved barrowloads of chip onto the quagmire in front of the shed.

Fencing added on top of Crag in readiness for sheep on Top Grazing.

Paul pulled his first log! Part of Meadow wall knocked down by local farm traffic - trailer came unhitched and crashed into the wall. Farmer very apologetic and set to repair it tomorrow. 

13th October

Wall repaired. 

17th October

71 sheep from local farmer John arrived to eat theirs hearts out on the Top Grazing.

18th October

Mike P helped John take down and log a Corsican pine in the Top Strip. He loved it and wants to do more!

20th October

Bill, horse logger and woodsman, came to help advise with Paul and logging. 

24th October

Sox and Snippets, Exmoor ponies, arrived to graze the Wildflower Meadow.

21st September

Fenced added to Meadow to protect hedging from Exmoors.

22nd September

John rode Paul at Codlaw.

John rode Paul back to Liddells from Codlaw.

Wildflower Meadow fence (for ponies, to stop them nibbling on hedging plants) completed.

Wall repair started on one of two areas possibly knocked down by cattle in neighbouring field.

August 2016 - the adventures of Clare and her flatpack scythe

2nd August

4 Willows planted on wetland and an existing Willow discovered.

5th August

2 huge brash heaps created ready for chipper. 

6th August

Green Gym Day. Mel, Jane E, John and Clare had chipped both piles by noon - 2 hours' very efficient work. Then more chip spread on path with Barry's help and steps started by Mel and Barry while John and John M felled 2 Larches. 

11th August

Nick started scything the Wildflower Meadow. 

12th August

Eggs in hive 1.

Eggs and brood in hive 1. Barefoot trimmer came to Paul - both very good!

15th August

Clare assembled her flatpack scythe! Clare scythed while John strimmed and Barry came to help.

Barry lent us his topper and we finished cutting the whole meadow and started raking rows.

All hay raked into rows and tedding. 

18th August

Some green hay spread on top grazing. Steps up path in top strip - section completed. Tedding hay.

More green hay spread and tedding. 5 dumpies of hay in store. Capped brood in Hive 1. 

22nd August

Campions grown from seed planted in meadow and 1 x Musk Mallow; hay removed. 

23rd August

More Campions planted; all hay removed; Yellow Rattle seed sown on top area of Meadow. 

25th August

Eggs and capped brood in Hive 2 - both hives viable! More Campion plugs planted. 

28th August

John built cavaletti for Paul. Clare planted Evening Primrose, Meadow Cranesbill and St Johns Wort plugs in Meadow.

Tynedale Community Choir included Liddells in their Singing Walk and picnicked on the trailer on the Top Grazing.

Becky rode Paul for the first time in the arena at Codlaw.

Green Gym: Mel, Barry and Sally helped: chipper hired - all chip in Top Strip dealt with and pile west of Meadow. More thistles removed from Meadow.

Tim saw a Small Heath butterfly on Liddells - a first.

7th June

Bees moved to apiary; Paul second and much improved lunging session; fox seen on Meadow; Paul walked down through Scrub on newly opened up path and back and then escaped back along this path through unclosed gate!

8th June

Grey squirrel on west wall; 2 deer on Top Grazing; Paul long-reined down path through Scrub and back. 

9th June

Clare completed thistle removal on Meadow and environs - 40 bags filled!

May 2016 - Northumberland Wildlife Trust Meadow visit

During May - more maintenance work on path west end of Top Strip - logs used for southern edge. 

2nd May

International Dawn Chorus Day - Clare did a breeding birds listen. 

5th May

Naomi Waite (NWT meadows specialist) walked over Liddells and found Adders-tongue fern in the Meadow. Janet made her first visit to meet Paul with a view to mentoring John. 

7th - 14th May

Janet looked after Paul. 

21st May

Steve Leigh, a barefoot trimmer, came and managed to trim Paul's forefeet. Lots of time spent moving Beech and Rowan logs and brash and ongoing logging and stacking. 

26th May

Clare started removing nettles from under Hawthorns on meadow and then began tackling the Thistles. Evidence of roebuck fraying on many saplings and the Spindle Trees.

Disastrous meeting with farrier - Paul reared, took the gate off its hinges and careered into the barbed wire fence.

Mark and Bill took down 3 Rowans that had been causing bulges in the south boundary wall.

Long-reining tutorials in Cumbria.

Bird hide Willows netted. Barn owl seen hunting over the Wetland and along near Top Strip.

Bird box fixed in scrub near (s) of south west corner of Meadow. 

16th February

All bird boxes cleaned and checked, No 4 resited to Orchard; shed section 3 started; logs moved from top strip. (Even referring to 'shed section 3' hints that there will be more to come...)

3rd shed section completed.

Meadow wet area refenced and additional stile. Seat made on old wall line. Wood cleared for chip from Rowan felled in quarry and logs split.

2nd January

We filled 37 bags with chipped brash...

3rd January

... another 11 bags filled, then all 48 stacked over the fence in the Top Strip and the unchipped brash from the same area moved too. 

4th January

John made a start on the shelter for Paul. (Please note we have already discovered we need more sheds.) Clare continued in her attempts to remove humps/molehills from the Meadow and excavate surplus stone from near the road wall. 

11th January

More work on pony shelter - frame now stable (pun intended) Clare would like it noted that while the photographs she took show John at work, she fixed every single board to the frame. Just saying.

12th - 28th January

Work continued on shelter to completion. Stumps cut in Top Strip. Stiles completed on new fencing at top of Crag; all stiles now have wire on the treads.

27th January

Chris visited with a drone camera and took footage of Liddells. Clare had a go at flying it - probably the most technologically advanced thing she has ever done.

29th - 30th January

Wildflower seeds collected locally last year, sown in pots/trays at home.

9th - 11th December

Clare worked on hedge in adverse weather! Mole hills decapitated!

10th December

Torrential rain, spring burst its capping, 2 Ashes blown down in Pit Wood.

14th December

Hedge completed, Crab Apple planted in Orchard hedge line; Christmas tree cut for Tynedale Community Choir party. 

15th December

Christmas trees cut for John and Clare and for Hal and Beth. 

16th December

Paul vetted at Roadhead; he passed!

21st December

2 metres of hedging planted to screen bee hives from the west. 

27th December

Damson and Wild Cherry moved from Meadow to Orchard. Post tidying/topping on lower entrance. 

30th December

We dug a pond on the site of the old water trough on the wetland. 

31st December

Luke came to visit Liddells having not seen the land since before we bought it. Pond so full, the stepping stones are covered! John made 2 stiles along the new fence. Clare worked on taking humps and molehills off the Meadow.

White Violets planted in Top Strip. Ponies collected and taken to Geltsdale. Campion planted on grassy bank in SW corner, Alchemilla and Wild Strawberry planted on Crag. Bendy Larch in NE Strip felled; stile built at western end of Top Strip. 

8th April

Purple Violets planted in top strip; Larch felled in NE plantation. Pied wagtails on top grazing.

10th April

Green Gym: Pat freed more trees in Pit Wood; Tim planted Teazel and Honesty on spoil heaps west of Meadow; Sally planted Leopard's Bane, Monkshood and Dame's Violet in Pit Wood near the spring; John made a stile into the Pit Wood; Clare did more Meadow flattening!

11th April

Green Gym: Mel and John felled the second bendy Larch in the NE plantation; Sally planted Bladder Campion, Solidago and Yellow Loosestrife on spoil heaps in the Top Strip; Clare and Sally started the Ramsons Ramble at the far end of the Top Strip path; Clare continued to hone her mattock management skills on the Meadow. Mel and John planted one Rowan and one Birch from Sally. Stoat hunting at east end of the Crag base.

13th April

John rotovated the eastern quarter of the Wildflower Meadow and 2 paths from the gate to the stiles in the north fence. More work on these paths and banking up the edges of the wet areas in the Meadow. More mattocking.

Seed mix (Sweet Cicely, Garlic Mustard, Wild Carrot, Wild Parsnip and Weld) scattered in Scrub, on Top Grazing and along eastern edge of Meadow. 

17th April

We decided to distribute the plug plants around the Meadow by delineating several circles laid out with string and apportioning the plants between them.; Foxglove and Hedge Woundwort planted under Hawthorn stands on Meadow; Wood Sorrel planted in Top Strip and more Geranium Sylvaticum. Brash on paths. 

18th April

More path brash in Meadow; 3 circles planted, one by entrance; Plantains to ward off serpents and serpent-like thoughts planted in quincunx and triangle either site of gate; tray of Sweet Cicely seedlings planted on north edge of Scrub; discovered bank of Cowslips on spoil heap west of Meadow. 

19th April

Trip to Egglestone Hall Gardens to buy 3 Spindle Trees, 1 Wild Cherry, 1 Damson and 1 Rowan. 

20th April

1 more circle planted; Wild Cherry, Damson, Rowan planted. (NB we were to discover later that planting specimen trees on a meadow is Not a Good Thing, so we had to move them!)

22nd April

Keith came to advise us on the Wetland - he affirmed idea of digging out ponds where the water is backing up. 

3rd December

We met at The Rat with Robert Charlton to talk about the possible ways to pump overflow water from the spring. 

7th December

We planted 21 Willows on the wetland. 

15th December

We cut down and delivered Christmas trees. 

31st December

Juliet came to take 4 ponies away.

21st April

Easter Monday: Juliet Rodger delivered six Exmoor ponies, which cantered to the west edge and got on with the business of grazing.

No 2 bird box now has down on top of the moss; first Cowslip out on the path down to the Orchard.

4th April

Brashing and strimming on Wrigley Walk in Top Strip. Juliet Roger from the Moorland Mousie Trust visited to discuss the possibility of her Exmoor ponies grazing the land. All parties in agreement, they arrive the week after next!

6th April

Wrigley Walk now cleared along its length. A sparrowhawk flew out of the quarry area, a peacock butterfly was on the gorse near the gate. We saw swallows on the corner by Crag House on our way home. 

12th April

Fence on southern edge of Pit Wood repaired and hurdle into orchard. 

13th April

Brashing along southern edge of Pit Wood; water trough cleaned; 2 bumble bees on top pasture; moss in Nest Box 2

14th April

More brashing on southern edge of Pit Wood; bird boxes up in Pit Wood, verge and top strip; work on trough (much flooding!). Ladybirds everywhere, several bumblebees and peacock butterflies; hunting buzzard; Mel doing wildflower survey. 

15th April

More work on water trough; more bird boxes in Pit Wood; Wrigley butterfly survey; work started to clear southern tip of western boundary fence. Deer ran out of Pit Wood, across Wetland up Crag, over Top Grazing and jumped into top plantation. Wood Sorrell at west end of Top Strip. Butterflies (peacock). 

16th April

Wild Cherry blossom in plantation; trough finished; more work on western boundary fence (stapling complete); 5 bird boxes in top plantation. 

18th April

Moss in bird box 8; more moss in number 2; chiffchaff seen and heard in Pit Wood.
